THE PUBLIC SPEAKER

ABOUT

My name is Kevin Crispin . . .

When I was in high school, I went to a peer counseling retreat. On the first day, there was a keynote motivational speaker. It was electrifying and captivating; I looked around me and saw that others in the room seemed equally affected. I knew then this would be something I would love to do.

As I have moved through life, I have always struggled with anxiety and obsessive compulsive disorder (with some depression mixed in!). Whether working as a performer, project manager, or chief of staff, I have always seen the way mental health is both addressed and endured in the workplace. I decided that I wanted to create a motivational speech that addressed this difficult subject head on. I believe stories are the great healing currency of humankind. The more we hear, the more we heal.

With my HEALING THE WRIST presentation, I discuss how anxiety forms in our minds and how it affects both ourselves and those around us. I also talk about how we treat anxiety and mental health problems as a problem to be solved as opposed to a problem to be understood and managed.

To be aware of our own fear and anxiety and depression can allow us room for the grace and kindness to understand that our fellow humans are dealing with a version of the exact same thing. Our emotions are not broken wrists. They cannot be set right once and let alone. They need to be tended to, they require patience and learning.

At the end of the presentation, we will ask:

Can I be that person of grace and kindness when the moment presents itself?

It’s a difficult and important question. I look forward to continuing the conversation. Please see below to learn more about my public speaking offerings and take a listen to my mental health podcast, SAD TIMES.

Each week, I host a podcast where we feature kind, generous, and empathetic guests who share stories of some of the most difficult times of their lives.

"It is our firm belief that if we could just talk a bit more about these things, we might be able to better understand each other, and perhaps feel more content in day to day life."

Sad Times

During my keynote presentation, HEALING THE WRIST, I will share stories from my own experience and relate them to my theory on what is going on in each of our minds as Anxiety does its work on us. The three key parts of this theory to be discussed in more detail are what I call:

  • THE VOICE: the voice we all hear in our heads.

  • THE ANXIETY: when what the voice says creates an emotion filled feeling of unease or doom.

  • A WORLD: the worst case scenario that anxiety quickly builds in our minds.

Mental Health is something every employee of every company deals with. According to the National Alliance on Mental Health, over 40 million adults in the U.S. (19.1%) have an anxiety disorder. Most people develop symptoms before age 21. Therefore, when a young adult enters the workforce, they already will likely have the symptoms. One in five people in your workforce are currently dealing with an anxiety disorder. Not only does Mental Health effect employees directly, it also leads them to trust their team less. Perhaps the biggest problem we are seeing is that people are afraid to come forward with their concerns out of fear of retribution and threat to their job.

HEALING THE WRIST aims to open the door for companies and coworkers to give each other space to be human and to remind participants that we are not alone but in fact in concert with all the other people we work with. We are all moving toward the same goal. And sometimes we all grow afraid, and then we deal with that feeling in both healthy and unhealthy ways — and that is okay. If you are in a place of work that provides a safe space in which you can talk through The Voice, The Anxiety, The Worlds created, they begin to lose their power and the employee’s focus can be back at the task at hand. I hope to lead you to and guide you through these conversations. However, this is not a one time solution. This is not a broken wrist and a cast. With any luck, this will be just the first step in inviting vulnerability into your workplace.

If you’re able to do this just a little each day, you will slowly become a bit more aware of yourself; and by becoming more aware of yourself, you will find it easier to connect with others.

When you feel ready to embrace this mindset, book a session with me below.
